Explanation
- Oxidation is the taking
away of electrons or hydrogen, and the adding of oxygen. Reduction is the
adding of electrons or hydrogen, and the removal of oxygen.
- It's hydrogen atoms
that are involved, not hydrogen ions (H+).
Hydrogen ions are about acidity, not reduction (see Q1#5 and Q2#5).
- Oxidation/reduction in
terms of hydrogen and oxygen movement is quite easy to remember, but if
you have trouble in remembering which is which in terms of the movement of
electrons, you might want to remember the mnemonic OIL
RIG.
Oxidation Is Loss.
Reduction Is Gain.
